Found that every 5-millimeter increase in left atrium diameter increased the risk of developing atrial fibrillation by 39 percent. 3963758 PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE MeSH.
An enlarged left atrim can be diagnosed and measured using an echocardiogram ECHO.
Left atrial size and atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation AF patients have enlarged left atria LA but prior studies suggested enlarged atria as both cause and consequence of AF. These data suggest that left atrial size is an important factor in the development of atrial fibrillation and in determining the long term result of cardioversion. The pathophysiologic mechansim most consistent with this is that a chronic hemodynamic burden initially produces left atrial enlargement which in turn predisposes to atrial fibrillation.
Left atrial size was measured and analyzed without knowledge of patient grouping. Two-dimensional echocardiography showed that 90 of the stroke patients had left atrial enlargement compared with only 20 in the nonstroke group. This finding suggests that left atrial enlargement may convey additional stroke risk in patients with atrial fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation AF is the most common sustained arrhythmia in clinical routine associated with cardio- and cerebrovascular complications dementia and mortality.
1 Persistent AF PersAF left atrial LA size and low-voltage areas LVAs mirror AF progression and influence further therapeutic strategies. Objective CHA2DS2-VASc score left atrial LA size and atrial fibrillation AF have individually been associated with stroke risk. Our aim was to investigate the predictive ability of combinations of these factors for the odds of incident stroke in a population-based cohort study.
Methods We followed 2844 participants from the Tromsø Study from 1994 to 2012. Patients with left atrial LA enlargement have a higher risk for incident atrial fibrillation AF stroke and death but studies including patients with AF not always confirmed these associations. An enlarged left atrim can be diagnosed and measured using an echocardiogram ECHO.
A normal left atrium measures around 20-40 cm 20 mm40 mm. Left atrial enlargement can be mild moderate or severe depending on the extent of the underlying condition. Left Atrial Size and Ischemic Events after Ischemic Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack in Patients with Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation.
Severe LAE was associated with increased risk of ischemic events after ischemic stroke or TIA in patients with NVAF. Den Uijl Jeroen J. LVH and LV dilatation cause an in increase in end-diastolic pressure followed by enlargement of the left atrium 9.
Atrial fibrillation AF is. Each group the increase in left atrial size was significant whether evaluated as an absolute change or a percentage in- crease over the baseline. These differences were maintained when left atrial size was corrected for body surface area.
Left ventricular mass increased by 177f50 g in the chronic atrial fibrillation group and by 601 f 50 g in the paroxysmal atrial fibrillation group pNS. In all three groups of patients atrial fibrillation was rare when left atrial dimension was below 44 mm 3 of 117 or 3 but common when this dimension exceeded 40 mm 80 of 148 or 54. Found that every 5-millimeter increase in left atrium diameter increased the risk of developing atrial fibrillation by 39 percent.
An enlarged left atrial LA size due to structural modeling is a well-known factor that facilitates the initiation and maintenance of AF and was proved to be a useful echocardiographic parameter in predicting AF occurrence. Left atrial volume is a strong predictor of events. There is evidence that patients with left atrial volumes above 34 ml per m2 are at high risk for ischemic stroke heart failure atrial fibrillation and death.
Volume calculations can also be performed with 3D technologies. Background Left atrial LA dilatation is an important risk factor for recurrence of atrial fibrillation AF after radiofrequency catheter ablation RFCA. However the clinical applications to select patients eligible for RFCA according to LA size is limited.
Additional pre-procedural assessment of LA fibrosis might improve patient selection for RFCA.
